Nils Petter Molvær is undoubtedly one of the most influential, if not the best, trumpet player of present-day jazz. Trumpet is one of the genre’s most emblematic instruments, with iconic musicians that have contributed to having it elevated to the role of leader. And as in Molvaer’s case, some performers have extended the instrument’s sonority beyond its usual limitations.
His beginnings in legendary Scandinavian jazz bands enabled him to develop his musical sensitivity, mixing jazz with other more challenging styles, such as ambient, house, electronic and break beat music to create new, intense, hypnotic and absorbing musical landscapes. Provocative and unpredictable, with the publication of Khmer (ECM, 1997) and Solid ether (ECM, 2000) new terms such as ‘future jazz’, ‘electro jazz’ and ‘nu jazz’ had to be created to try to define or classify his creations.
