Katurian, a writer of short stories that describe abuse of minors, is arrested by the police in a totalitarian state. His stories suspiciously resemble a series of crimes that have been recently committed. Katurian is innocent. His brother Michael, who is mentally retarded, is the one who has committed the crimes. Katurian’s story is intertwined with the recreation of some of his short stories, including El escritor y el hermano del escritor, that narrates who the main character acquired his warped imagination listening to his brother’s laments when the latter was a child and was tortured by his parents.
For McDonagh, the world is a hostile place in which there are very few things that can help us escape from horror. One of them is literature. That is the case for Martin McDonagh and for Katurian, who wonders to what extent a creator is responsible of spectators’ perception of his work.
