Hand programme (ESP)

We are at the beginning of a rehearsal, the actors arrive, and a little later the director. The actress who is always late obviously arrives late. Curiously, the play they are going to rehearse is by Luigi Pirandello: The Rules of the Game, a comedy about a love triangle. The actors stoically put up with the director’s bad humour; the director, in turn, cannot put up with anyone, not even with Pirandello, and is fussy about everything and everyone. Until the rehearsal is interrupted by a family of six persons who say they were born as characters and have an impossible request, namely that someone perform their tragedy. Thus comedy is mixed with tragedy, fantasy with reality and the characters with the actors.  .
Six Characters in Search of An Author is one of the most paradigmatic and influential works of theatre of the 20th century. A large part of contemporary dramaturgy is influenced, consciously or not, by this play. Suffice it to say that every so often, we inevitably return to it. To its questions, which have never been answered, and will never be (…) What is reality? What is truth? Is there a reality that is not true? Is there a truth that is not real? (…)
Six Characters in Search of An Author is a play whose intimate pursuit is to find tight-rope walkers of the stage who know how to move from comedy to drama and from drama to comedy, from chaos to order and from order to chaos, from reality to fantasy and from fantasy to reality. Or, to say it in the most concise manner possible, pure theatre.”   Antonio Álamo
