Retrato de Raoul tells the story of the exceptional career of the actor and singer Raoul Fernández. Born in  El Salvador, Raoul inherited from this mother the gift of sewing, which for him was the city of Paris. On arriving at the French capital, he meets “another” Raoul, known as Copi, becomes “dresser” at the Opera of Paris and finally makes it to the stage. His story is complex: Raoul is a man, but he feels that he is a woman. Presented as a monologue-confession, the play deals with the subject of gender and sexual identity.

The French actor, theatre director and playwright Philippe Minyana has written more than thirty-five plays, librettos for opera and radio pieces for which he has received numerous prizes and nominations. Like the literary masters Handke and Beckett, when talking of his work Minyana explained that “I try to capture the anxiety and unease of man, here on earth. My theatre is not psychological or sociological. I hope that my work is in some way the work of a poet.”
