Virginia Woolf narrates 24 hours in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, from the moment she wakes up in the morning and starts preparing a party for her husband until the party is about to start that evening. Clarissa Dalloway is an apparently dependent and superficial woman; a housewife who, like so many others, is devoted to taking care of other persons. A woman who has complied with the demands of society without taking into account her own wishes.
As she gets everything ready for the party, her thoughts focus on her life and she starts becoming aware of the decisions she has made. Through her main character, Virginia Woolf speaks of sexual and economic repression, feminism, mercantilism, bisexuality, medicine… and of the existential emptiness which is probably what connects this novel most to our present time.
