This play, one of the most ingenious, funniest and best constructed of Spanish Golden Age theatre, introduced the ‘comedia de figurón’, a subgenre similar to farce that stemmed from the “cloak and dagger” genre, characterised by the main character’s grotesque aspect, who is caricatured and involved in an insane, unexpected event until the final mockery. Don Lucas del Cigarral is a wealthy, ridiculous and excessive gentleman, who is courting doña Isabel de Peralta, who in turn is in love with don Pedro, don Lucas’ cousin, who is as handsome as he is poor and who returns her love. Whilst the lovers try to outwit don Lucas, two unforeseen obstacles appear on stage: don Luis, who is also courting Isabel, and doña Alfonsa, don Lucas’ sister who sighs for don Pedro. The mechanism of this mess will be lubricated by the servants Cabellera, Carranza and Andrea.
