The fifth piece of the first collection of Slavonic Dances composed by Antonín Dvorák that are contained in Op. 46 of his catalogue is a skocná in allegro vivace written in G major for piano four hands.

In turn, his “Carnival” Overture, dedicated to the University of Prague, expresses contrasting exaltation of life, on one hand highlighting the merriment typical of the carnivals, and on the other, manifesting with a degree of lyricism, and even pessimism, moments of meditation.

Making use of a harmonic language that recalls the French pre-impressionism of Chabrier o Fauré, Josef Suk composed his Scherzo Fantastique in F minor, Op. 25 in 1903 with the intention of evoking Czech folklore, as it contained the small orchestral pieces of his father-in-law Antonín Dvorák.

Dvorák’s Symphony no. 7 marks the beginning of what would be his last creative period dedicated to this musical form, repeating the tonality of his Symphony no. 4, with which there is certain analogy. This gives the symphony a sombre yet passionate aspect, which is why some critics consider it to be his Pathétique.
