Shostakovich composed his Violin Concerto no. 1 in A minor, Op. 77 between 1947 and 1948, time when censorhip in the URSS was very rigid as a result of the famous decree of Andréi Zhdánov, third secretary of the Community party, which subjected all artistic creation to the ideological standards imposed by the CPSU. Some years after this period of strict censorship, this very significant 20th century oeuvre concertante was first performed on the 29th of October 1955 in Leningrad with great success by its dedicatee David Oistrakh and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra with its permanent conductor Yevgueni Mravinski.

With his Symphony no. 5, Op. 47, Shostakovich responded to the criticism of the Soviet regime by renouncing to the modernism of which he had been accused. He reduced the instrumental mass and substituted the structural episodic articulation offered in his Symphony no. 4 with a more classical formal scheme based on a simpler language. This way he simplified its harmonic and melodic links, favouring a better connection with the instrumental sections.
