Franz Schubert’s peculiar melodious style was reflected in his first six adolescent symphonies, in which metal instruments constitute the nucleus of the orchestration. The themes were usually borrowed and geared at highlighting the voice above any other musical particularity. His Symphony no. 3 in D major, D. 200, written in the spring of 1815 when he was still teaching music as an assistant in his father’s school, must be understood in this line.

The Austrian Anton Bruckner can be considered one of the most prominent  symphonists in history. The size of his orchestral works reveal a marked tendency towards monumentality. His symphonies constitute, in a certain way, orchestral replicas of the dramatic lyricism of Wagner, to whom the Symphony no. 3 is dedicated. According to the prestigious German musicologist and conductor Rudolf Kloiber, the  Symphony no. 3 “inaugurates the sequence of Bruckner’s masterpieces, in which his creativity comes together with his enormous capacity for orchestral construction.”
