Hand programme (ESP)

A tribute to six heroines of jazz –Betty Comden and Carolyn Leigh (lyricists of jazz standards and Broadway musicals), Blossom Dearie (performer, pianist, composer), Ann Richards, Chris Connor and June Christy (singers)– who defied the society of their times to find their place in an eminently masculine world; pioneers who contributed, together with many others, to enable women to have a career in the field of music. The live performance of 16 songs is combined with a multimedia projection that places the audience in the social, labour and artistic context of the six protagonists. Their experiences and anecdotes are intertwined with memories and experiences of singer and group leader Maria Esteban.
“Nothing must define us. Nothing must hold us back. Freedom must be our own substance.” We could say that this statement by Simone de Beauvoir reflects perfectly well what helped these audacious women forge their way and consolidate their careers in the complex world of music.

María Esteban Quintet has given concerts in different.venues and festivals of Barcelona, including the VII Festival Lindy Exchanged, Festival Mas i Mas, Ciclo Jazz Tast, CC Can Verdaguer, Fiesta Mayor Sant Antoni (CC Cotxeres Borrell), Ciclo Jazz a la Boca, CC Navas, CC Can Pere Pruna, Red de Bibliotecas de Barcelona, Jamboree Jazz Club, Festival Zero 3 (CC Convent Sant Agustí), CC Collblanc, etc.
