On Ron Carter’s website, his biography mentions about 2,200 recordings, and his résumé is astounding. One of the most original, prolific and influential musicians in the history of jazz, he began his career as a leader in 1961 with the publication of Where?, a record featuring Eric Dolphy and Mal Waldron. Soon afterwards, he formed the rhythmic section of Miles Davis’ quintet of the mid-60s, together with Herbie Hancock at the piano and Tony Williams on drums, with whom he recorded noteworthy albums such as Miles Smiles and Nefertiti. In addition, he played his double bass in records that are fundamental for the history of jazz, such as Speak No Evil (Wayne Shorter), Maiden Voyage, Speak Like a Child (Herbie Hancock) and Red Clay (Freddie Hubbard). He can also boast having played with VSOP, where he coincided with Shorter, Hubbard, Hancock and Williams; with the Great Jazz Trio and Hank Jones and Williams, and the sensational quartet with Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner and Al Foster.
Carter has also recorded with Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery and Cannonball Adderle. In addition, he has played the double bass in recordings of other music genres, including records of Roberta Flack, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Bette Midler and Aretha Franklin, as well as the seminal second album of A Tribe Called Quest (The low end theory).
At the 31st Malaga International Jazz Festival, Ron Carter was awarded the ‘Cifu’ Award on occasion of the tour to celebrate his 80th birthday. He is returning to Teatro Cervantes 6 years later as the leader of Foursight, a quartet which also includes Renee Rosnes at the piano, Jimmy Greene on the tenor saxophone and Payton Crossley on drums.
