10 years after the death of the legendary Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, the Malaga International Jazz Festival will commemorate his impressive musical legacy with the exclusive concert of an ensemble conducted by Bebo’s friend Paquito D’Rivera, collaborator and also musical legend, with the noteworthy presence of the most renowned present-day Cuban pianists Caramelo de Cuba, Pepe Rivero and Grammy award winner Iván ‘Melón’ Lewis.
Paquito D’Rivera, born in La Habana, Cuba, in 1948, is an acclaimed saxophone and clarinet player, who in addition to his 11 Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, is known as one of the most influential representatives of Latin jazz, a genre which he shaped and helped disseminate all over the world. D’Rivera joined the National Orchestra of Cuba at the age of 17, co-founded the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music with the pianist Chucho Valdés (Bebo’s son) and subsequently founded the innovative ensemble Irakere, with which he formulated, together with Chucho, Arturo Sandoval and other prominent musicians of his generation, an explosive mixture that combines the Afro Cuban heritage, bebop, rock and classical music. D’Rivera is also a founding member of the United Nations Orchestra, an ensemble of 15 musicians organised by Dizzy Gillespie to show the fusion of Latin and Caribbean influences with jazz. The saxophonist from Habana has an extensive discography (more than 30 solo albums) that reveal his dedication and enthusiasm for jazz and Latin music. His contributions to classical music are as impressive, both as a composer and performer.
