Las Leandras is a spicy (“indecorous” for some conservative critics) comedy of intrigue that exploits play on words and contrived situations. It was the most successful Spanish variety show in 1931, the first year of the Second Republic, and probably the most famous of all time. Amongst the excellent repertoire of songs for the ten musical numbers, the most applauded are the schoolgirl chorus ‘A dar lección’, the widows’ java ‘Ay, qué triste es ser la viuda’, ‘Canción de las viudas’ and ‘Canción canaria’, the exotic ‘Clara Bow, gentil star’ and above all, ‘El Pichi’s’ iconic chotis and the pasodoble of the tuberoses ’Por la calle de Alcalá’, which could well be the hymn of the city of Madrid.
