La tabernera del puerto is one of the Basque composer Pablo Sorozábal’s biggest successes. A story of action and passions to the limit set in the imaginary port of Cantabreda. Three old smugglers in their twilight years get together again. Marola, the tavern keeper, shares a business with Juan de Eguia, one of the three men, who asks her to entangle Leandro, a sailor in love with the young woman, in a shady operation. Leandro and Marola are arrested with cocaine in their possession. Juan de Eguía reveals, to everyone’s surprise, that Marola is his daughter, confesses his guilt and asks the soldiers to only arrest him.
For La tabernera del puerto, Sorozábal wrote vibrant and witty music that avoids clichés and that, with the work of the librettists, considerably enriched the genre from a dramatic point of view. Its plot and the forcefulness of its characters bring together all the elements of an authentic lyrical drama.
