Roberto and Víctor, two artists who live in a garret in Paris scraping out a living, are composing an opera with which they hope to achieve fame and fortune. Cosette lives in the adjacent flat. She is the daughter of a retired tenor who is preparing her for an audition at the Ópera of París as a singer. The young woman, who is in love with Roberto, knows the opera he is writing by heart, having heard it so often, and hums it all day long, constantly interrupting Roberto’s work. Monsieur Girard, a patron of artists, supports Cosette  to present her in society; she, in turn, wants him to do the same for her neighbours.
With a libretto based on the same work by Murger as Puccini's La bohème, Vives composed a brilliant and delightful score from beginning to end. The composer of the celebrated Doña Francisquita and La corte del faraón brings to this zarzuela the magic and colour of the music and romantic bohemia of the mid-19th century. Bohemios, a hymn to love and friendship, was the author's first great success, being performed up to 18,000 times in its first 25 years.
