A comedy mix-ups and mystery that humorously tells a cloak-and-dagger story tale of love and adventure. Set in Sajonia, El galán fantasma (The Phantom Hero) depicts the trials and tribulations of Astolfo, who is in love with Julia and hunted by the duke, rival for Julia´s love. Astolfo, wounded by the duke in a battle, pretends to be dead and visits his love by a secret garden tunnel. He convinces everyone he is a ghost, which causes a series of errors and disputes, simulations, apparitions and emergencies that result in the typical happy ending of this type of “comedia áurea.”

El galán fantasma recovers a largely forgotten work, unjustly viewed as lesser “teatro calderoniano” (theatre characterized by excess tragedy and a sense of allegory), historically undervalued despite its importance to the author´s dramatic production. In this case, the dramatic motor is deception and death. “Deception and death generating the great comedy of the world and of life, dedicated to those who enjoy contemplating their own misery, their own pathetic jokes. Sounds funny, right? Prepare yourself…well… to laugh.”   Mariano de Paco Serrano
