The day the Spanish Civil War ended, Franco decided to hold a dinner in the Hotel Palace to honour the generals who lead his troops to victory. The hardened lieutenant Medina, in charge of the preparations, must quickly revitalise the hotel’s battered and practically nonexistent kitchen. He decides to recruit the hotel’s chefs, but because of their political leanings, they are behind bars. Faced with the impossibility of finding qualified replacements, and in a desperate attempt to satisfy the scrupulous demands of General Franco, lieutenant Medina decides to break the “reds” out of prison. This is the basis upon which a series of tragicomic and almost surreal situations develop that put the military into a bind, and will land them behind bars as well.
La cena de los generales is a metaphor for the 40 years under Franco and a reflection about men with a more complicated history than the characters they play. Narros confirms that “we have a need to and are condemned to understand ourselves. We are in charge of reconstructing our coexistence, which is why the kitchen represents a devastated Spain that must be put back in order.”
