THE GOD OF CARNAGE
By Yasmina Reza
Version Jordi Galcerán
Starring AITANA SÁNCHEZ-GIJÓN, MARIBEL VERDÚ, PERE PONCE and ANTONIO MOLERO
Direction TAMZIN TOWNSEND
> duration 1.40 h. (uninterrupted)
A nine-year old boy has hit another boy in a park. The parents decide to meet to deal with the issue in a civilised manner. Benevolent and conciliatory, both sets of parents have a tolerant and understanding discourse. But, with the same subtlety as the conversation starts, they start to show a change of attitude – a small change that leads to another larger change, and which eventually leads to an open challenge that clashes with the possibility of any kind of peaceful agreement. Both couples defend their territory until the fight becomes a war of all against all. That is the moment in which that “Wild God” arises within each of them, rebelling itself against the insatisfaction of their lives.
What happens when education, good manners and rules for civic coexistence collapse? Why are we only capable of defending our territory without understanding or sharing that of others? What happens when parents are worse than their children? Reza has written a great tragedy whose situations, as extreme as real, make it a hilarious comedy, while delivering intact the message regarding the complexity of human relationships.
The God of Carnage (Le dieu du carnage) opened in December in 2006 in Zurich (Switzerland); later, in Paris, directed by the author herself and featuring Isabelle Huppert; and, shortly after, in London with Ralph Fiennes.
