Jesus Christ Superstar, the biggest, and probably the most controversial musical in history, was a landmark event in the genre, and Spain also had a piece of the action. Thirty years after its first performance, Jesus Christ Superstar returns with a cast that is led by three of the best musical singers in Spain: Gerónimo Rauch (Jesus), Ignasi Vidal (Judas) and Lorena Calero (Mary Magdalene). Thirty four actors, twenty two songs, a modern look and the latest technological advances all come together to make Jesus Christ Superstar stronger, more brazen and to give it more rock.
Based on the last seven days of the life of Jesus, the events of Judas’s betrayal, the last supper, his love for Mary Magdalene and the crucifixion turn into a story with a rock rhythm that reveals to us hope, the strength of being human and the rebellious nature of youth. Judas, a man torn between his sense of duty - that leads him to betray his master – and his admiration and devotion for him; Mary Magdalene, the lady who sees the path to Jesus’s redemption in her impossible love for him, Herod, Caiaphas, Anas, Peter… and Jesus Christ from a contemporary and anachronistic point of view, transformed into a leader of the masses that the people follow with fervour at first and then hunt with resentment afterwards. With musical influences from The Who, Webber has written a score with a strong leaning towards rock and unforgettable songs.
