The purchase of a painting, very expensive but apparently unimportant, becomes the trigger for three friends - the crafty Serge, the quick-tempered Marc and the fainthearted Yvan – to throw their fifteen-year friendship to the winds in the space of a week and to behave like nations at war: secret alliances, broken pacts and, above all, zero tolerance. This is the product of the fragile nature of human relationships and the lack of capacity for understanding and loving over and above our own prejudices. Arte has become the wisest and funniest play in the world on the subject of friendship.
It is also the most staged play by a living writer in the history of world theatre. This is the resounding nature of the work that we are staging. It has been translated into thirty seven languages and it has been a great success in all of the countries where it has been played. Its main virtue is that it knows how to combine commercial and literary success. It is an admirable work, built on characters who reveal themselves little-by-little, until they take on an unsuspected complexity. It is also a work that, amongst the laughter - a lot of laughter, tells us a few very significant things about ourselves. Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best example of what a comedy should be like.
