Luis Balmes has been travelling around the world for almost two years, helping anyone with the money to pay for it to free themselves from dangerous tobacco addictions. His well known therapy takes him to Málaga, the city where his ex-wife Ana lives. Luis decides to visit her at the local newpaper (where she is working to try to rebuild her professional and private life) to confess his most closely guarded secret to her: he has started smoking again. Once they are back together, all the past truths and lies come to the surface. Nothing is as it seems. The past and present get mixed up together during a very long night: in the end, it is difficult for them to realise that the most dangerous addiction that they share is their love for each other... Can they be cured?
Juan Luis Galiardo describes Humo as a “purifying and healing tragic comedy, because it contains all of life’s pillars, touching on the worlds of appearances, addictions and lies that have become part of our modern day society”. Using these features as a basis, the writer develops themes of “entertainment", “therapy” and “thought” which he considers to be “historical features of the theatre that have to be reused in a lively way”. All of these features can be seen in this play, which encourages interaction with the audience and makea a true cultural experience possible.
