Bilbao. Polo studied with E. Pascu, M. Kliegel and I. Moniguetti, amongst others, at the Reina Sofía Higher School of Music, coming to the fore when he took first prizes in violoncello and chamber music in the National Youth Competitions (1987-1989). In the final years of his career, Alfredo Kraus invited him to play as a soloist at his concerts, which saw him perform at the Maggio Fiorentino (Florence), Covent Garden (London), Musikverein (Vienna), etc. Polo has recorded for Claves, RTVE and Naxos, while composers such as G. Erkoreka, Luis de Pablo and A. García Abril have dedicated work to him. He is particularly committed to modern music, especially Spanish, and has been awarded numerous outstanding prizes, including Radio Nacional’s Ojo Crítico (Critical Eye) (02) and Fundación CEOE for Musical Performance (04). He currently teaches at the Higher School of Music in the Basque Country.
He plays a Francesco Rugieri violoncello (Cremona, 1689) and is considered to be one of the ten best cellists in the world.
