Conductor EDMON COLOMER
Piano CEDRIC TIBERGHIEN
Variations on “America”, W. Schuman
Symphony number 2 for piano and orchestra, “The age of anxiety”, L. Bernstein
City noir, J. Adams
Devoted entirely to North American music, this programme closes the season with three of US’ most unique composers. Firstly, William Schuman with his Variations on “America”, based on an organ piece by his fellow countryman Charles Ives. “I took all the liberties to make the thing come out plus the fun of [seeing] if you could do it without changing anything, and I did”.
Symphony number 2 “The age of anxiety” is inspired by a poem by British poet W.H. Auden on “the struggle arising from the crisis of our century, a crisis of faith”. The composer was drawn to the idea of setting music to this notion, and devoted himself to it intensely. The result is a symphonic piece with a solo piano with a marked spiritual feel.
John Adams’ City noir was also inspired by a reading, specifically of K. Starr’s book Dream. City noir puts an end to his symphonic triptych devoted to California, from its stimulating minimalist premises, bearing homage to North American urban music.
