The Miraculous Mandarin, Op.19, B. Bartók

Zoltán Kodály is a clear example of a composer linked to folk music. The “verbunko” motifs, with their characteristic gypsy rhythms, are an essential element of the Dances of Galánta, written with brilliant orchestration and the vitality characteristic of Hungarian folklore.

Kriysztof Penderecki composed his famous Concerto for viola and orchestra as a commission from the Republic of Venezuela to commemorate the second centenary of the birth of Simón Bolívar. It is a work of one single long movement of beautiful expressive variety.

The Valses nobles et sentimentales are seven valses of different characteristics with voluptuous melodies chained to one another without interruption. It is the typical work of a genius like Ravel, whose composition work was guided by a deeply original and generous vocation.

The symphonic suite resulting from the tragic ballet-pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin is a masterpiece of 20th century orchestra, which revolutionised stage music with the dramatic eroticism of its plot.
