Symphony nº10: Adagio, G. Mahler
The Song of the Earth, G. Mahler
When Gustav Mahler started to compose Das Lied von der Erde and his Tenth Symphony he was in his period of full creative maturity, prepared to carry out his last active phase as a composer, that would contain his posthumous work, which he never dared publish or release, given the risk involved in using it to build a bridge towards the serialism technique that was to follow.
In Das Lied von der Erde, Mahler used new methods of composition, alternating and varying the themes, always wrapped in melodic accompaniments, from an existential persuasion that life never repeats itself. This unique piece is the high point in the composer’s significant and broad orchestral production, the overcoming of his symphonicism, leading to the immediate evolution of music.
“The content of my entire life is poured into my symphonies. In them I have expressed all my experiences and suffering. It is truth and poetry set to music. So closely entwined are creating and living, for me…”.
