Requiem, Op.48, G. Fauré
During Easter, a chance to see two pieces with the same title, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, by very different authors. Scottish composer James MacMillan expresses the need to create a sense of the sacred in art, in music and in life through minimalist forms. The popularity of this emotive work, in its five sections, lies in the power, energy and frankness of its staffs. In the case of Kodály, his Veni,…, based on an 18th century French sacred hymn by the same name, expresses great hope and effusive joy at the advent of Jesus.
At the summit of religious music, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem is moderate in attitude, modest in melody and gentle in sound, making it resemble chamber music applied to choral melody, where one can see his interest in recovering Mediaeval church singing and his great knowledge of religious music acquired as a great organist.
