The Dream of Gerontius, Op. 38, E. Elgar
One of the high points of Edward Elgar’s production is his oratorio The Dream of Gerontius. The composition follows the guidelines that define this gender as the musical piece which, from a text normally based on histories of saints or biblical passages, uses dramatic, narrative and contemplative elements with obvious didactic motifs that lead the audience to reflect. The composer bases his composition on the poem by the English cardinal John Henry Newman, one of the most relevant figures of Catholic doctrine in the last third of the 19th century, where he sets out his reflection with regard to the immortality of the soul.
Elgar wished to express here the justification, adaptation and difficult equilibrium of his Catholic faith. It also contains the best of his creative flair. Its harmonic flexibility and fluid chromaticity make it the first British oratorio where chorus and orchestra play equal parts.
