Symphony number 9 in D major, Op. 73, G. Mahler

Three events marked the last years of Gustav Mahler’s life from 1907 to his death. The death of her first daughter, Maria Anna, only five years old, the loss of his position as Head of Art at the Vienna Court Opera, following a fierce campaign against him based on his Jewish origins, and the heart condition that eventually caused his death. A state of depression gradually took over his mood, affecting his marriage with Alma, once his beloved wife and the intimate muse of his compositions. The resulting emotional state made him visit the eminent Sigmund Freud, who was not too hopeful with regard to his diagnosis. In these personal circumstances, Mahler undertook his last creative phase, where he produced this Ninth Symphony, which can be considered more of an existential need than the natural fruit of a period of evolution of this unique composer who positioned himself equidistantly between Romanticism, which was reaching its end, and the new aesthetic horizons of the beginnings of the 20th century.
