Toy Symphony, L. Mozart
Babar the Elephant, F. Poulenc
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, P. Dukas
Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op.34, B. Britten
For children. The story of a little elephant and the predicaments of a disobedient sorcerer’s apprentice through the eyes of two composers; the ins and outs of a symphonic orchestra and an orchestra with ‘impossible’ instruments shown by two other composers. Different periods, different styles and different starting points: a musical joke (Toy Symphony); a piano improvisation on a children’s story (Babar the Elephant); a creation in a recently budding musical form –though its later transformation into an animated story by Walt Disney might lead us to forget this– (the symphonic poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and a piece for ‘education and entertainment’ (Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra).
Each of them can be an initiation to enjoy listening to music, without prejudices. They are a reminder that music can be enjoyed and experienced in very different ways. Each of these pieces proposes us a different way: the hilarious and transgressive effect of an instrument we do not expect; the immediacy and freshness of a story that we make up as we go; the seamless musical framework that a well-known story helps us unveil; or the happiness of recognising an instrument that we could not distinguish before, or perhaps one which we didn’t even know the name of.
These pieces have helped many children open the doors to the marvellous world of music – they may have helped you as well. They still hide many treasures, and it would undoubtedly be a pity if we were to forget them. Open your ears again, or bring your children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces... to remind you of what that feeling was once like for you. For children? No. For everyone.
