Tapiola, Op.112, J. Sibelius
Symphonic Variations, C. Franck
Bacchus et Ariane (Two Suites for Orchestra), A. Roussel

All the pieces within this season ticket programme no. 5 are considered to be among the best achievements of their respective authors. If Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) is well known by music lovers in general and malagueños in particular, César Franck (1822-1890)is not so much –though in previous years we were able to enjoy another of his essential compositions, Symphony in D minor– and Albert Roussel (1869-1937) is practically unknown to most.

All three have interesting lives which determined, in some way or other, the uniqueness of their compositions. Jean Sibelius was driven to provide the Finnish nationalist movement with a musical voice; César Franck, marked by a father who wished to make him a piano virtuoso, devoted great part of his life to the organ and would emerge, in his fifties, as a composer with powerful convictions; and, at an age when other composers are usually maturing, Albert Roussel was still at sea, with no serious musical knowledge.

Although their origins and circumstances were very different, they all share a strong awareness of the responsibilities of composers, and do not feel threatened by musical values, some of their works containing suggestions beyond the realm of music. Thus, Tapiola is based on the Kalevala, the great Finnish national epic; and Bacchus et Ariane, originally a ballet, tells the story of Bacchus and Ariadne. As the title suggests, Franck’s Symphonic Variations do not contain these suggestions, which do, however, appear in other pieces by this composer. Symphonic variations or symphonic poems, suite orballet, these are not the issues for Franck, Sibelius and Roussel. The issue was being able to express the bubbling life within them.
