Conductor EDMON COLOMER
Cello LLUÍS CLARET
The Walk to the Paradise Garden, F. Delius
Cello concerto in E minor, Op.85, E. Elgar
Symphony no. 4 FS 76,Op.29, “The Inextinguishable”, C. Nielsen
There is much to discover in the music of our times... and also in that of past centuries. This is very good news indeed. The three authors that share the programme of this interesting concert provide an excellent opportunity to catch a glimpse of the more hidden –and unjustly overlooked – face of late 19th and early 20th century music. Their chronologies are similar, but their personalities and careers could not be more different; Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius (both English) and Carl Nielsen (Danish) belong to the margins of the musical epicentres of their times –a distinction for the most part awarded by experts. At a time when everyone was talking of Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss or Claude Debussy, they, and many others, were also writing great music which, we should remember, could not have been created at any other time, even if only due to its indefinable and beautiful feeling of loss it often transmits. Its values and priorities were simply different.
The concert calls for unprejudiced listening. Thus we will admire Elgar’s Cello concerto, an essential for cello repertoires, and a first for the Malaga Philharmonic; enjoy the poetic expression of an independent and fascinating composer such as Delius, captivated by one of his opera interludes, A Walk to the Paradise Garden, and delight in the emotional intensity offered by Nielsen’s Symphony no.4, “The Inextinguishable”.
