Although unaware of it, we have all heard, and even hummed, the music of Ruperto Chapí. We may not know much about him, his background or his ingenuity, or about how music was part of his everyday life, practically from birth, or about his hard times and his efforts to get to grips with the rudiments of composition, his stays in Italy and France, absorbing –and criticising– everything he heard, his many triumphs and the occasional failure on his return to Madrid, or about the title of his pieces; whether they are operas, zarzuelas or whether they belong to the género chico, or his fights for the recognition of the rights of composers with regard to abuses from impresarios... But his music is very much a part of Spanish cultural heritage. The celebration of the centenary of his death in 2009 aims to recognise this debt we owe him, for his lack of fear to talk to us "happily, lightly and wittily", needy as we all are of a "bit of amusement".

Having fortunately overcome many sterile prejudices and impossible comparisons, we are now prepared to appreciate the savoir faire, the intuition, the skill and, especially, the lyrical and dramatic gift of a composer who wrote "great" and “small” (chicas) works alike. It is especially in the latter where, with honesty and no vacuous pretentiousness, he makes the most of the immediacy and freshness of the genre to delight us, as he would have it, after a day of work and preoccupations. Nothing more and nothing less, ladies and gentlemen.
