Since its emergence in African-American churches in the U.S., the vocal quality, strength and charm of gospel music has since spread throughout the whole world. Of its many branches, the “Gospel Choir” stands out as a choir that breaks with conservative structures and mixes tradition with other styles like funk and blues. In its genre, the Alabama Gospel Choir is one of the most exclusive groups.

Born in 1946 in the deep south of the U.S. and historically linked to the Aeolians Choir, it pertains to the Black Seven-Day Adventist church that promotes the harmonious development of the body, mind and spirit. The Alabama Gospel Choir is made up of twenty voices that preach the word of God with devotion and feeling. Prevalent in festivals and tours around the world, their unique style has met with success from the critics and public in each of their concerts.

With a varied repertoire that includes music from the Baroque style to music of the 20th century, the Alabama Gospel Choir takes the audience on a unique journey through the roots of a genre that fuses the visceral with the spiritual. In March of 2003, the choir was awarded the Bronze Star in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. It is now part of Francine Murphy’s choir, one of the major voices of soul and nominated for a Grammy in 2008.
