Michel Camilo “Solo”

> duration 1.30 h.

With a superb piano technique and a primarily canonical jazz style, Michel Camilo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 1954) infuses his compositions with afro-Caribbean rhythms, an expressive language rich with harmonious textures and a contagious contemporary sense of swing.

At sixteen years old, Camilo was already a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de la República Dominicana (Symphonic National Orchestra of the Dominican Republic), of which he would be the director years later. Since his 1985 debut in Carnegie Hall, he has been a first-class fixture in the international jazz scene. His eighteen albums have been recognised with a Grammy, an Emmy, two Latin Grammys and two Spanish Music Awards. He has recorded solo, as a duo, trio, sextet, with big bands and symphonic orchestras…and he moves with equal ease through jazz, Latino beats, flamenco and classical music. His influences range from Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and McCoy Tyner to Chick Corea and Erroll Garner, and of course Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy and the Ernesto Lecuona of Cuba. These influences unite with an originality that is recognised worldwide and is evident in every note he plays.

Appointed Creative Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 2009 and 2010, and before beginning a Japanese tour with Tomatito, Michel Camilo will visit us for a piano concert, a format that he particularly likes because it allows for concerts that are “freer, full of fantasy and romance and exploration.”
