Captivating and genuine, Toni Zenet is a malagueño from Pedregalejo (1967) and a crooner (as well as a musician, actor, poet and artist) with an incredible voice. Los mares de China is his first solo album and sounds just like a classic. It is a journey through Andalusian copla, Argentinean tango, Cuban son and New York jazz, with intimate club melodies and short distances that remind us of both Miguel Molina and Frank Sinatra. Natural fusion. No clichés. Music as we have always known it that hasn’t been made until now, deeply charged with the collective subconscious. His songs could have been written in the 20’s, 40’s or 60’s, but they are very much this century – and all of them are by Javier Laguna. “Those who hear them think they aren’t originals”, says Zenet, “but rather covers of classics”. That’s always a good sign.

Zenet is no newcomer to music. Sur. S.A. was his first funky flamenco band, (“when no one was doing funky flamenco”) but things didn’t go as planned. That is how the Zenet project was born a couple of years ago at some jam sessions at Madrid’s Plaza bar. Its mission? To create emotional, nocturnal yet sunny songs, brought to life with Toni’s special voice. The result is an exquisite tailor-made suit and one of the most surprising albums of recent years.

Chet Baker, Billie Holliday, Scorsese, Edith Piaf, Bola de Nieve, Chavela, Conchita Piquer (La Piquer) and Kamala are all influences mentioned in his label’s press release. But Zenet is so much more. Ladies, Gentlemen … dust off your hearts.
