Greek contemporary music’s most international voice returns to Spain with her new album Mírame, produced by Javier Limón and including sounds inspired by flamenco, traditional Spanish copla –including a surprising Greek version of ‘Cárcel de oro’ by the masters León, Quintero and Quiroga– and Arabic folklore. A warm and energetic performer, Eleftheria Arvanitaki communicates an ambition to create a bridge between deeply-rooted ancient Greek rhythms and new urban sounds made by distinguished composers and Hellenic poets, uniting them in the borderless fusion of her music.
Eleftheria started her musical career in the early eighties with the Opisthodromiki Compania, where she became the promoter, advocate and best-known voice of rebetika music –from rebetis, rebel in Turkish, created by Greek refugees in Asia Minor–, a genre that was almost unknown until then. After leaving the group in 1986, she launched her solo career, which established her as the voice of her country’s new feelings and ideals. Featuring Balkan and Eastern European influences, Menos Ektos, published in 1991, marked the path for her musical future, establishing her as a musician in Greece and reaching all of Europe thanks to the success of one of its songs, “Dinata-Dinata”.
In more recent years, Eleftheria sang at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and at the Womad, Montreux Jazz and Jerusalem International Festivals, and has collaborated with musicians such as Cesária Évora, Dulce Pontes and Philip Glass.
