In July of 2002, Lizz Wright (Hahira, Georgia, EE.UU., 1980) went from anonymity to jazz star, thanks to her interpretation of ¨I cover the waterfront¨ and ¨Don’t explain¨ in a concert in homage to Billie Holiday in the Chicago Orchestra Hall.
At six years of age, Lizz sang in the church where her father was preacher and did musical trios with her siblings, and at fourteen taught herself to play the piano. In Lizz’s case, her life path and her musical path were one and the same, but it wasn’t until the publication of Salt (03) that Lizz was introduced to the world. Two years later, she has revalidated her quality and vindicated her right to be with the big boys with Dreaming wide awake. Now, she’s confirming herself as an artist with The orchard, which besides being her childhood soundtrack in a small, rural community, includes versions and creations of her own, enveloped in her throaty voice with a mixture of styles as exquisite as they are eclectic, a strange and magical blend of blues, jazz and rhythm & blues, reminiscent of pop and folk.
The distinct, relaxed and sensual air of her songs combined with a melancholy, naïve, and even timid attitude on stage, along with intimate interpretations, bouncing with spontaneity, freshness, without pretensions or unnecessary technological effects, are the features that personalize her music, as much as a composer as an interpreter, justifying her fascinating entrance in this decade’s musical landscape.
