JOSHUA REDMAN Saxophone
REUBEN ROGERS Double Bass
ERIC HARLAND Drums
One of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists of the 90s, son of legendary saxophonist and free-jazz icon Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman (Berkeley, California, 1969) had contact with many instruments and musical styles from a young age. When he was nine years old he began playing the clarinet, which he then exchanged one year later for what would be his first real instrument: the tenor sax. His first influences-from J. Coltrane and O. Coleman to The Beatles, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police or Led Zeppelin-put him in deeper contact with music, forging an eclectic style with a marked ¨bop¨ tendency, although he defends himself as a purist.
Joshua Redman has surprised us again with a new three-part project with the sax, double bass and drums. Back East (07), nominated for a Grammy as the best instrumental jazz album, is something he had wanted to do for a long time, but that up until now he didn’t feel prepared for, he affirms. ¨A trio is a very, very demanding format; without a piano or any other string instrument, you’re naked, exposed. But it’s also very liberating and stimulating, and the music can go in unexpected directions.¨
Since he was awarded the first prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Award prize in 1991, besides his own projects, Redman has recorded and played with musicians like Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Larry Goldings, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Quincy Jones, Big Daddy, B.B. King, Joe Lovano, Yo Yo Ma, Branford Marsalis, Pat Metheny, The Rolling Stones, John Scofield, McCoy Tyner and Stevie Wonder.
