Wilco started as an alternative country-rock group, and have gradually opened their arms to folk-rock, avant-garde, power pop, psychedelia and experimental music. Besides dazzling, their creative process is one of the most radical, daring and effective processes that can be found in the American rock scene.
After the break-up of Uncle Tupelo, singer, guitarist and composer Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco in Chicago, in 1994, with bass player John Stirrat, drummer Ken Coomer and multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston. The quartet would later be joined by guitarist Jay Bennett to record their debut album, A.M. (95), which continued along the lines of Uncle Tupelo: blues-rock and country-rock pieces in the style of the Byrds, Dylan, Stones or Neil Young. Their second album, Being there (96), surprised listeners with an obvious interest in experimental music and traces of rock, country, psychedelia, folk and pop; Summerteeth (99), one of their best albums, is full of spectacular power pop melodies; Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (02), again highly experimental with melodies wrapped in daring arrangements, ambient sounds and an increasingly personal perspective –in 2002 they also recorded the soundtrack to Ethan Hawke’s film Chelsea Walls–; A ghost is born (04), a reflection of the search for the perfect sound, though the songs are still the absolute priority; and, lastly, Sky blue sky (07), where the band recovers its more melodic and calm sounds in a series of simple but beautiful compositions.
Sky blue sky sounds like a kaleidoscope with multiple nuances and possibilities. Here the waters of all their previous works come together, as well as their interest in recording with dignity the sound of better times. The sky is blue like before.
