Big Star (Memphis, Tennessee, 1971) is one of the most influential and unknown bands in the history of rock. Going against the current of the progressive virtuosity that was in vogue at the beginning of the 70s, they bought together the crystalline freshness of The Beatles and The Byrds and the forcefulness of rock. But Big Star stayed unknown until the 80s, when the critics started to mention their discs as being amongst the most noteworthy from the previous decade, citing them as an important link between the guitar pop of the 60s and the new wave sounds of alternative rock that were in fashion at the time. This is how the acknowledged creators of power pop became a cult band and a crucial influence for bands like R.E.M., The Replacements, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub and Plimsouls, among many others.
The writers of the albums #1 Record (72), Radio City (74) and Third/Sister lovers (78), which have often been imitated but never bettered, made a comeback on the music scene in 2005 - after recording a couple of live albums - with In space, a warm and friendly disc containing great songs marked by Chilton's exquisite sensitivity.
With their fast guitars and superb melodies, Big Star is one of those groups that play the sort of music that could be considered as mass pop, but their songs have influenced so many that, in the end, they have been able to create a current of their own in musical history. Big Star are still together and they only appear live on rare occasions, like this one.
