José Gonzalez started to cross boundaries bit by bit with the sensitivity and emotive minimalism of his debut album, Veneer (03), and there was no way that he could not be compared with the great tormented geniuses of folk and singer-songwriter music. After the critics and television publicity had elevated him to the level that he deserves to be at, and his second album, In our nature (07), met the high expectations that had been created by his first work. In his second album, this Swede of Argentinean parents travels deep into apparently calm landscapes of sound that boil with existential and emotional thoughts and politics that are plagued with symbols. All of the songs are tinted with the distrust, fear, uncertainty and passion that are in our nature. Although they are sad and intimist, they discover a restless and, paradoxically, almost optimistic world.
José was tired of the vast and diverse musical information on offer - from Latin American rhythms and the Anglo-Saxon pop and rock hits that he listened to at home, to the bass that he played in a punk band, his flirtations with hardcore and indie rock and Flamenco classes… He finally opted for the classical guitar, along with arpeggios and harmonic chords… A personal style in which can be heard the influence of Chet Baker, Elliott Smith and Jeff Farina and which proves it is possible to be successful with independent folk.
