They have stayed away from the recording studios for five years and it seemed that they had gone for ever, especially after their leader recorded two solo albums. Now Tindersticks returns with their seventh disc and Stuart Staples` crooner voice singing those melancholy, attractive songs that brought them so much fame and that are perfect for broken hearts. The Tindersticks are one of those groups from the 90s with a real personality and an absolutely recognisable sound. Their decadent elegance and their omnipresent and delicious wind and string sections have survived the test of seventeen years. They are always in the shadows, but always present. Sticking to this tried and tested formula, they are here to present us with The hungry saw. Although they stay true to their dark and mysterious origins of majestic and velvety chamber soul-pop, it is a refreshing comeback that is even luminous and positive at some times.
This group from Nottingham has not made any compromises with the commercial music industry, they are not strictly a rock group or an alternative music group, and certainly are not a soul or folk group – even though they combine elements of all of these genres. They have classical training and their melodies can be naked and blunt or can flirt with jazz, stridency and funk. They have built an independent and atypical career that is unparalleled on the contemporary music scene.
