16 years, 8 official records, 17 EPs and several compilations can be attributed to Stereolab. They have their own universe which is just as original as it is recognisable, and as personal as it is vast. Indie pop, electronics, rock and krautrock, noise, cinephilia, lounge, psychedelic, French pop, jazz, bossa nova, loops… a hypnotic halo and libertarian lyrics makes this band - with a British underground cult following during the 90s and one of the first that the term "post-rock" was applied to – one of the most influential groups in recent decades, and they are essential for understanding the union between pop and electronic music.
Four years after the release of their last original album, Margerine eclipse, the British band is back with Chemical chords, which was released last August and contains fourteen original themes. This is the group’s most solid and inspired album. It also has a few surprises; Motown and soul rhythms break into its arsenal of resources, along with delicious string arrangements by Sean O´Hagan, an old member of Stereolab who now plays for the High Llamas.
Chemical chords is something more than Stereolab’s happy comeback. It has brought out the best of the group. It is cerebral and physical. It does not have any superfluous speculations. It is their most spontaneous, direct and cool album and perhaps their least expected because of this.
