Last March, Andrew Butler, the DJ and producer from New York released the first album of his new and ambitious project, Hercules and Love Affair. Spurred on by the success enjoyed by his first single, the brilliant and witty "Blind", a fully fledged clubbers anthem that he recorded with the invaluable participation of the vocalist Antony Hegarty (Antony and The Johnstons), the new band's album takes us back to the end of the 70s and the start of the 80s. These years were loaded with musical delights, sexual ambiguity and brazen narcissism when discos started to give way to high energy that would later become the house that we all know and love.
Hercules and Love Affair is one of the most ingenious and original musical collaboration processes that has been seen in recent years. It is a genre that has been produced by the New York underground, whose members are the enterprising Butler and the bizarre and melodramatic Hegarty (who is alone at the recording studio at the moment), along with the enigmatic transsexual singer Nomi (who used to sing with CocoRosie), and Kim Ann Forman, a lesbian DJ from Hawaii. With their dance and retro style and background in electronic music, their aesthetics are reminiscent of Greece and Rome and are a true equilibrium between the hedonist spirit and the desire to transmit complex and sincere feelings, this poly-sexual and explosive meeting of artists is the latest shake-up on the international music scene.
