Ever since 1957, and long before the “canción del verano” (the summer song) hit the charts, Peret has been providing us with authentic dance-floor hits. His works are popular all over the world - “Borriquito” is one of the most translated Spanish songs into other languages – and they have become timeless classics of Latin music. This entertaining way of making a bit of cash to pay for parties turned into a full time job and then a fully fledged musical genre. With influences from flamenco on one hand, and Elvis Presley, Pérez Prado and Beny Moré on the other, Peret knows how to turn just about any style into rumba. The Catalonian rumba is direct, fun and almost pop-like, and it is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience to hear Peret play it.
With his 73 years, his charisma, his unmistakable voice and his extraordinary capacity for communication, Peret serves up equal parts of energy and knowledge with rhythm and sensuality, without forgetting the key features of the genre that made him famous: the surrealism of the lyrics and dances, the tireless rhythm and jokes.
To celebrate 50 years of the Catalonian rumba this October, and after performing at Viña Rock, Pirineos Sur, the Zaragoza Exhibition and New York’s Lincoln Centre, Peret has released a new record which again shows his mastery with songs that are at once sentimental, reflective, ironic, provoking and, in any case, irresistible.
