Composer and pianist Herbie Hancock (Chicago, USA, 1940), as well as being a tireless innovator, is one of the greatest figures in the history of jazz. A prodigal son, he joined the Miles Davis quintet in 1963, allowing him to take part in recordings of masterworks like Miles smiles and In a silent way. He was fascinated by funk, mixing styles and the combination of electronic techniques with the acoustics of the piano. With his own band “The Headhunters” he contributed to the creation of jazz-fusion at the beginning of the 70s. He discovered scratch in the 80s and explored the rhythms of urban music together with the Rockit Band. After winning an Oscar in 1987 for the film music for Around mdnight, he formed a duo with Wayne Shorter, reunited The Headhunters and paid homage to Gershwin, among many other projects. After Future 2 Future (01) and Possibilities (05), he released River: The Joni Letters last year, winning a Grammy for album of the year. It is a tribute to the wonderful singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, an old friend and Hancock’s continual collaborator who he recorded Mingus with in 1979. Freely adapting Mitchell’s work and expanding her musical and lyrical conversation, this fantastic pianist offers us the opportunity to hear her songs with new life.
