Pablo Sorozábal´s production is one of the most solid and interesting of the new generation of “Zarzuela,” or traditional Spanish operetta, which emerged after the Spanish-American War. A lyrical current, romantic and sentimental, that invokes the “chulapa” notes of historical Zarzuela, with their realism and grace, and imbues them with the drama of the national crisis experienced after the disaster of the colonies. For La taberna del puerto, Sorozábal wrote vibrant, ingenious music that is anything but commonplace. Together with the work of the librettists, this is music, from a dramatic perspective, that notably enriches the genre.
Its plot and the strength if its characters are consistent with all the elements of an authentic lyrical drama: a young barmaid in love as the protagonist; the jealousies of the fishermen who see her youth and beauty as a temptation for their men; an authoritarian and violent father, suspicious of everything; impassioned love, all-powerful; a young man and the backdrop of a fishing port that sets the stage for the dramatic action that unfolds.
