It’s truly curious that the story line of one of the most important works in Spanish lyrical theatre should revolve around the creation of the French national anthem and its author, Rouget de L’Isle, who was a victim, like so many others, of revolutionary persecution.

La marsellesa offers an extensive score that is very closely related to opera. The music is precisely adapted to the dramatic quality of the plot, both in the intimate scenes, in which the melodic inspiration of Caballero always shines, as well as in the big concertantes and choral numbers, full of vitality and drama.  The frequent presence of the famous hymn is introduced by the author with singular mastery, underscoring diverse scenes.

Ramos Carrión´s libretto also works well, given that the action takes place during the French Revolution. Around the figure of Rouget de L’Isle, the librettist constructs a story of love, jealousy, betrayal, intrigue and abnegation that adds up to a solid melodrama. Comic scenes, inheritances of classical theatre and habitual residents of the genre, interrupt the predominantly dramatic ambience that dominates the work with surprising probability.

Interestingly, it´s worth mentioning that La marsellesa opened at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga in the 1876-1877 season, that is, the same year as its premier, by the Francisco Arderíus Company.
