Eifman Ballet Theatre

By Boris Eifman inspired by the work of the same name by Alexander S. Pushkin
Music P.I. Tchaikovsky and A. Sitkovetsky
Choreographed and directed by Boris Eifman

> Duration 1.45 h. (with intermission)

Based on the novel in two acts by A.S. Pushkin, Onegin, though it maintains the poetic and philosophical aspects of the original work, offers us the opportunity to discover it with new eyes.

Evgene Onegin is one of 19th century St. Petersberg´s most sought-after bachelors who, after squandering his fortune, receives an inheritance from an uncle with land holdings in the country. He moves there and meets his neighbour Vladimir Lensky, who introduces him to his fiancée’s sister, Olga Larin. Between these two emerges a love story that is hindered by a misunderstanding that obliges Onegin to flee.

The name Boris Eifman is associated with the most interesting experiments and the most audacious performances of classical works, reinterpreting and enriching them both in form and content. For Onegin, the prestigious choreographer mixes classical and contemporary music, as well as the real with the fantastic, and the result is a powerful emotional experience.

Why did I choose this novel? Known as “the encyclopaedia of Russian life,” in Eugene Onegin Pushkin saw and created an uncannily true archetype of the Russian character at this period, creating a poetic image of the Russian soul- mysterious, unpredictable and incredibly sensual. I use my art to understand the secrets of the Russian soul. To base a ballet on this work is another attempt to express the most profound spirituality through dance. I needed this experiment to get closer to answering a question that had unsettled me: what is the Russian soul today?
