Popular Argentinean music, with the exception of some other minor dances, is centred around three movements: tango, milonga and malambo. The tango, with its Buenos Aires rhythm, is passion and sensuality. Even though it was originally exclusively for men, women began to dance in the “Roaring 20’s” and became fixtures in the best shows in the United States and Europe. The milonga, addendum to the tango, can be slow and sentimental or quick and flashy. “To do the milonga” in Buenos Aires means to go to the “bulines,” locales found all over the city, where elegantly dressed men and “minas” (women) dance together for hours without even getting to know each other or exchanging a single word. Finally, the malambo, originally a wild and ritualistic dance from the Patagonian Indians who lived there in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the “gauchos” from La Pampa adapted it for a more festive setting, and its vibrant rhythm at their parties mixed with the heat of the fire, the smoke, the tobacco and the smell of roasting meat. Little by little they added tools from the field, like “boleadoras,” lassos with stones attached to three ropes, and now, for the strong visual impact, the dynamic sound of the stomping shoes and clicking heels, the wealth of nuances, and the sweeping rhythm...a worldwide success.

Malambeando unites the tango, milonga, malambo, Spanish dance, Irish step and the ancestral sound of the “bombo legüero” (percussion instrument) with Arabic and African rhythms and contemporary music.
